Honing can be used to remove etching and scratching by removing the surface and producing an even uniform finish. Honing includes removing a thin layer off the top of the stone to leave it with a smooth matte finish. Honing requires a specialist stone mason to complete.
How it Works
Diamond abrasive pads in variant grades are using to hone down a thin layer from the stone. Honing natural stone will create a smooth matte appearance, this is perfect if you require a smooth, non slip surface ideal for bathrooms and other areas where moisture is present frequently. Honing will also restore natural stone when it has been stained severely and can not be removed with cleaning alone. In many cases this can happen if the wrong sealer has been applied previously to your stone and can not be chemically removed. This process will restore your stone to its original condition in preparation for sealing. Once the honing process has been completed, a premium penetrating sealer will be applied.
Sealer Choices
- DeepShield Transparent Penetrating Sealer (10 year lifetime)
- DeepShield Colour Enhancing Penetrating Sealer (10 year lifetime)
- DeepShield Gold Transparent Penetrating Sealer (15 year lifetime)
Extra Charges
Very severe deep etching and scratches can sometimes be removed with honing alone, depending on how deep into the stone the damage is. Removing these can be at an additional cost of $10 per square metre.
Instructions
We require that all areas for cleaning are cleared for our arrival, and that you have moved away as much of the furniture as possible.
Important Information
- Sealed surfaces usually need a minimum of 4 hours to be touch dry before being walked on.
- Sealed surfaces should not get wet until the sealer has fully cured, this can take up to 24 hours after sealing. This should be taken into consideration when sealing outdoor areas.
- You must wait for the sealer to fully cure before testing the sealer or carrying out any cleaning.

Whilst the utmost care is taken during the honing process, this is a mechanical procedure involving heavy-duty grinding equipment. As such, there is a possibility of minor marking, scuffing, or damage to adjacent surfaces, including but not limited to painted walls, skirtings, trims, door frames, or fixtures. By proceeding, clients acknowledge this risk as part of the process, and touch-ups to surrounding finishes are not included unless otherwise agreed in writing.

Back end communications became annoying. I received multiple duplicate reminders that became excessive. Also I received a 'sharp' email advising final payment was overdue BEFORE i received the invoice ( which which was paid upon receipt). Overall service good but you could add to your workflow a personal telephone call about a week befire the acheduled start date to check all is OK.
My job was originally scheduled for 8 am Wednesday. I got a text Wednesday morning saying Robert would be delayed and would arrive at 9:50 am. Then I got another text saying he would arrive at 9:30 am. He arrived just after 10 am and said he'd brought equipment for a different job and would need to reschedule for 7:30 am Friday. On Friday morning I got a text saying he would be delayed and would arrive at 8 am. At 9:30 am I called Tile and Grout Pro who were keen to help. He arrived just after 10 am, said he got caught in traffic (for 2.5 hours?) and completed the job. I'm happy with how the travertine came up, but the honed bluestone shows marks from where the honing took place and isn't a smooth finish. Overall I'm not very happy with how the Bluestone came up and Robert's communication was terrible. Tile and Grout Pro seemed to want to help but I imagine there's only so much they can do when the person doing the work isn't a direct employee.
Janaka is the ultimate floor stone master. Honestly it was not cheap for him to come here for a full day to do the work but ultimately he delivered on what was promised. If your stone floor is in despair then look no further than Janaka. I would use him again no hesitation and highly recommend him.
